SETI

We're constantly on the lookout for new members, but sometimes we may go too far!

What is it?

SETI@home is a worldwide project in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence.

You run a small program on your computer, which downloads part of the data collected from the radio telescopes dotted around the world. It then uses the spare processing capacity on your computer to examine this data, looking for anything interesting (well, I'm sure it's looking for something in particular, but I'm damned if I know what, and I probably wouldn't understand it even if I was told!)

Won't that slow down my computer?

Not particularly. I'm running a SETI@home client on my AMD 2000XP, and even though I've got my ICQ client, mail client, two terminals, clock, Opera web browser and Mozilla web-browser running at the same time, it still manages to use the 99% of CPU power I don't use. Unless I run my Amiga emulator as well... :)
It's designed to use the free clock cycles on your computer, the time time that's wasted by the computer it's waiting for you to do something (remember, even a 100MHz machine could be doing nearly 25,000 things in a second). You can set it to be a bit more aggressive and to take some of the CPU time from other programs, which will make them seem slower, but can run through the work units quicker.

Where do I get it from?

The SETI@home main page is at:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu
You can download the client program from there.

So where's the BrumGoth team?

The information page can be viewed from:
BrumGoth's SETI@home group
You can also join the group if you're an existing SETI@home user
